Just renewed my subscription to discover that the 2014 version has everything except a firewall.
Instead it activates and provides access to Windows Firewall.
For those using a firewall such as Zone Alarm or COMODO, the process is sometimes badly identified is known to have four other instance: So you must go into the configuration page of your firewall and allow the program to modify the registry and/or write files.
In fact, if you have other antivirus installed, then the may have been detected as being a virus, thus preventing the proper functioning of Avira. It may also be due to virus attacking the system update of antivir.
Now, a cynic might point to a company trying to save money, while someone more optimistic might suggest that Windows Firewall is of high enough standard to be dependable.
I have also cleaned the registry of remnants of previously uninstalled applications...
The system tray is on the bottom right side of your screen by the clock.
If you have Windows 7 you may need to select the triangle in order to access the icons in the system tray.
Of course you probably already have seen this from posters over at Wilders in the MSE thread over there. I use to install Avira on friends and family PC's, but now install MSE as there is no way they would no what to do with the Avira update issue, and most likely wouldn't even know it wasn't updating.
I finally got the latest updates, but agree that this problem will most likely always be around.
